The Affiliate Marketing industry is a crazy business. Those of us who work in it do it because we love our jobs. Nothing is ever boring, and laws and trends change so often. Even with the variety and entertainment of this business, working too many hours and losing work/life balance can eventually wear anyone out, leaving you burnt out and unhappy. Below are 5 tips to keep you happier at work.
1. CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY AT WORK Happiness is a choice and it’s all in your attitude. Most people wouldn’t agree with that, but it’s the truth. It’s over simplified but that’s ok because simplicity can put difficult concepts into perspective. You may not have the best job, or make millions, or like your boss. But you can think positively about your work. Remind yourself about the aspects of your job that you enjoy. Don’t allow negativity to consume your thoughts. Find coworkers you like and hang out with them. You really can choose to be happy at work.
2. TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT A candidate recently complained to me that she wanted to change jobs because her boss was not doing enough to help her grow professionally. Who do you think is most interested in her development? The answer is NOT her boss. You are the person who will benefit most from continuing to challenge yourself and take on new responsibilities. Be accountable for your own growth. At the end of the day, we need to take responsibility for our own success. Do this, and you will be happier feeling more in charge.
3. GET LOTS FEEDBACK You could also call this constructive criticism. We may feel that we ourselves are doing a GREAT job, but it’s important to get others’ feedback in order to make you the best you can be in your current job. If your boss tells you that you should be more aggressive in communications with your affiliates, focus on improving that for a week or so then ask for feedback again. By taking this stance, you are being a problem-solver instead of a complainer. Don’t know why things aren’t going well? Improve them! What better way to make your work environment a happier place to work than making it more pleasant for your coworkers as well.
4. ONLY MAKE COMMITMENTS YOU CAN KEEP One of biggest reasons people get stressed is from failure to keep commitments. Many employees spend more time making excuses for failing to keep a commitment, and worrying about what will happen to them when they fail to do what they said they would. Create a system that lets you to figure out your ability to complete a requested commitment. Don’t volunteer if you don’t have time. If you have too much work to do, come up with a plan to ask your boss for help and guidance. Whatever you do, don’t make promises you can’t keep!
5. IF ALL ELSE FAILS, JOB SEARCHING ON 3 LITTLE BIRDS INTERACTIVE WILL MAKE YOU SMILE If all of these ideas aren’t making you happy at your job, it’s time to reevaluate. Don’t spend your life wasting away at a company or job you hate. Most work environments don’t change all that much, but you will just get unhappier and disgruntled if you stay in this kind of situation. Be happy and spend all of your non-work time job searching. You will see that there are plenty of opportunities out there and that there is hope for you to be happy again at work! Make sure to submit an application in our “Job Seekers” section on the website.
